This section took me up to Dawson Creek, where the Alcan Highway officially starts, and on up to the Liard River Hot Springs which was about 700 miles in total and and 420 miles along the first section of the Alcan.

While in Jasper the day before I learned that the Alcan had been closed between Ft. Nelson and Liard River due to an out of control forest fire. The road was going from open to closed with one way traffic every several hours so it was hard to tell what I'd find once I got there. Fortunately they had reopened it about an hour before I got there...whew!

While yet again a stunningly beautiful drive, the highlight was reaching Dawson Creek where the official starting point for the Alcan is.

Driving up to the fire zone uner a blood red sun.

While waiting for the pilot car to guide us through the fire zone I noticed the bug count was already growing and I hadn't even made it to the Yukon yet.
