The drive from Anchorage heading south along the Cook Inlet is absolutely stunning, especially so on a summer evening. The first little town you come to is Girdwood at the base of the Alyeska ski resort which is definitely a local's favorite. A short distance further south is the turn off to Whittier which driving to is a very unique experience to say the least. From there it's on along the Kenai and Kasilof rivers. The Kenai national wildlife refuge along the way is a great detour through some rich wildlife habitat for bears, moose and lynx. Homer itself is a small village/town of a little over 6,000 people in an idyllic setting along the Kachemak Bay and Wildlife Preserve. Home to hundreds of thousands of sea birds and other various wildlife it is a truly wonderous place well worth a visit.

Horsetail Falls up above Whittier. Everywhere you looked for nearly 360 degrees there were cascading waterfalls coming off the high peaks down into Prince William Sound.

I took a little side trip up through gthe Kenai Wildlife Refuge and was rewarded with this sight of a beautiful female black bear with three tiny cubs at her side.

Another view of Homer and Kachemak Bay from a bike ride out of town that climbed from sea level to nearly 2,000' in a rather short distance with sections of 20% plus pitches. Felt like riding the Vuelta, only at well less than half the speed...
